I have been looking at the movies that are currently playing at the theaters and I must say that I am quite disappointed. After the useless dump month of September you can actually count the number of good movies that came out on one hand. As bitter old man winter approaches, you can always find quality movies at cinemas. However this year has been quite dull. Most of the highly anticipated movies have been getting average reviews and I've managed to see a few of these duds. So let us pray that the month of December will be the month of redemption at the theaters. Here are few notable releases: The Day the Earth Stood Still: This is a remake of the 1951 Sci-Fi classic about an Alien visitor on earth and the mystery behind his visit. The original is considered to be one of the best Sci-Fi movies ever made. I am quite wary of such remakes. This one stars Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly and Kathy Bates. The director Scott Derrickson has proven himself in ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’. So we can only hope that he works his magic on this remake. Keanu as an Alien? How can we go wrong? Or maybe we can.

The Wrestler: This movie is about a retired professional wrestler, Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson trying to make a comeback through the independent circuit. The drama revolves around Randy’s turbulent life. The very talented Darren Aronofsky is behind the director’s chair and so far the movie has been getting nothing but rave reviews. The film stars Mickey Rourke & Marisa Tomei in the lead roles. This is one of the movies that I am definitely looking forward to in the month of December. Our resident news warrior Manu has a piece on this film. Check it out: Aronofsky Harnesses The Wrestler under movie news.

Yes Man: Jim Carrey stars as a man who decides to say ‘yes’ to everything and anything. That changes his life dramatically and he has to face the consequences. I am a huge Jim Carrey fan and I am really hoping that he gets back to his silly comedy roots. Jim Carrey has struggled lately and hopefully this movie can break his slump. I want to see more ass talk than anything else.

Seven Pounds: Another drama from always charismatic Will Smith. Will Smith is an IRS agent who sets out on an extraordinary journey to make amends for a tragedy in his past. Will Smith unites once again with Gabriele Muccino, who directed The Pursuit of Happyness. We can look forward to another strong performance from Will Smith. Could be Oscar bait for Mr. Smith. ![]() Opens: December 19th 2008
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: David Fincher is back. The movie tells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backwards with bizarre consequences. This film stars Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, and Tilda Swinton. Fincher has provided us with some great thrillers in the past and I certainly hope that he can put out another extraordinary movie for us.

Valkyrie: At the height of World War 2, a group of high-ranking German officers hatched a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler and seize power of the military command in order to end the war. The operation was code named "Valkyrie", for the emergency plan that was meant to be used in case of a revolt against the Nazi government. Tom Cruise stars as a colonel conspiring to over-throw the Nazi government. The director Bryan Singer is quite competent, and so this movie should be a dandy. ![]()
